Mariano played Nicolas Almagro on Monday on Centre Court He beat him in straight sets 6-3 7-5. He took a cruising 4-0 lead in the second, and also had a rain delay and a court-repair delay - Almagro upped his game and fought back to 5-5 - but then Mariano took control again holding serve, then breaking Almagro easily to take the match. Mariano then played Carlos Moya - who increased his number of wins over Mariano by winning again. Here is Corina's Bastad report Corina and Birte were our secret spies live in Sweden, they said he played an exhibition Mixed Doubles match over the weekend where everyone had a totally great time, smiles and laughing constantly. The Spies also that he's REALLY big here in Sweden :o) Corina also says this tournament is really fan-friendly with the Centre Court being in the Hotel Grounds - and the Ocean nearby. Corina News... The doubles match was really good, very close!! but the wrong winner.... Mariano and Juan were good together :o) Watch this space for more news from the Spies. Bermuda 16 - 22 April Mariano won Bermuda! He beat Bjorn Phau in round 1 Catherine Zeta Jones gave him a glass vase..... (that Girl gets ALL the good jobs... ;o) )
CONGRATULATIONS MARIANO! Other news... Mariano is back in the Top 100 again - this week's ranking is No. 88!!! ATP Mens Clay Court Tournament - Houston! Mariano qualified for Houston and faced Ryan Sweeting in the first round. Mariano took the first set really easily (only lost 5 points) but the second set was much closer, going the distance 7-6 (10-8 tiebreak) with four match points and a set point included too.. Mariano won! Mariano then faced Mardy Fish (Defending Champion, No4 seed and top 30 player) and beat him 7-5 6-4! His next victim was Jurgen Melzer (last year's finalist) 6-1 6-2 He NOW faces James Blake in the Semis. The James match was incredibly awesome (I was lucky enough to have coverage from the Semi-finals) - He totally outplayed James completely. Mariano reached his first ATP final in 2 years... which was totally fantastic - and we all want more of course!! He faced Ivo Karlovic (for the first time) and... long story short... Ivo won his first title... Ivo also had a great week during Houston and managed to save a massive 18 out of 19 break points ... Mariano did try really really hard to stop this run... but it didnt happen. - It was really fantastic to see Mariano play in a final... the Houston crowd loved him - that showed! - which just means.. that we all want more finals... no pressure there then :) - 2007 is looking great!! - Keep up the great work!!!! He played Top Seed (and fellow cute Argentinian) Diego Hartfield on Tuesday, the second Night Match on Centre Court. Final result - Mariano def Diego Hartfield 6-4 5-7 7-5!
