The Basil Awards 2002

Marcus and I managed to get to Scottsdale and Indian Wells again this year; as per usual it was a great trip - reports and photographs coming soon - but to get started; and just as a bit of fun - here are my personal awards for people that made our trip so memorable

Most Friendliest Player (Scottsdale & Indian Wells)

Runners-up Friendliest Player (Indian Wells)

Mariano Zabaleta

Arnaud Clement
Sargis Sargsian
Paradorn Srichaphan

Most Pesky Player!!!

Fernando Vicente!!!

James Blake - He does a brilliant "Side-Show Bob!"

Impressionist - Female

Eleni Daniilidou
she does a brilliant Nicolas Lapentti - she even fooled Sara (briefly)

Horacio de la Pena (Coach to Fernando Gonzales and Jose Acasuso) - he's NEVER off the court.

Mr Grumpy Bunny 2002

Fernando Vicente

New Talent (looks) 2002

Arnaud Clement's tatoo (an owl) - well he looks good and has to work hard being attached to Arnaud's shoulder!

for the Ladies - Maria Sharipova - the 14 year old sensation; roll over Anna Kournikova - this young lady is about to steal your crown.

He's Stalking me!! Fernando Vicente! - if we got in an elevator; he'd be coming out; if we went to a local restaurant HE was there too!!
Ran away with a ball girl award Mariano Zabaleta - she didn't get out of his way so he scooped her up instead - very cute moment!

Bravery Award

Tammy Tanusugarn - she played a brilliant match againt Cara Black when unfortunately injury struck - she really did not want to give up - and her pride flatly refused to let her retire

Most Outstanding Achievement Michel Kratochvil for knocking out defending champion Andre Agassi - Michel's a nice guy! he deserved the win!

Player who understands his job description perfectly

(jointly) Marat Safin and J-M Gambill -

These two have successfully defended this award from last year.

Last year - Marat Safin was quoted as saying that he thinks a Tennis Player has 3 jobs. Play and win; Entertain the Fans; Talk with the Media, he also says that entertaining the fans is the priority! -

J-M Gambil shared his views; agreeing that after all, it’s the fans come out and spend money to support them win or lose!

These two would both STILL be there signing and photographing with fans; again they waited until everyone had been photographed and signed before leaving the practice area; and also stopped to chat to everyone that wanted to wish them luck - nice guys.

Forever on the Practice Court

Jose Acasuso

The Basil Award for Generosity (Scottsdale)

This goes to Vee - thank you for driving all the way to Scottsdale and back! It was great seeing you again - hope to see you again next year

The Basil Award for Generosity (Indian Wells)

This goes to Goran Ivanisevic for giving up his place in the draw to LL Mariano Zabaleta. He could have quite easily just gone out there; hit a ball once, then retired injured - but he didnt!

The Basil Award for being Betsy

Goes to Betsy!! great seeing you again - thanks for letting us have somewhere to hang out during the hot sun etc etc etc - it wouldn't have been the same without you!

Stay tuned for further Indian Wells stories I hope to get them published as soon as possible
