Paris this week!!!

Mariano Escaped the Qualies Draw at the last minute thanks to Joachim Johanson withdrawing.....

He played Paradorn Srichaphan for the first time in the first round.

These two players are two of the nicest people with beautiful manners and as everyone knows.... Mariano is my friend and Paradorn is my husbands friend.

ln my opinion, they bought out the best in eachother, it was a really enjoyable match from the stands. I know both players enjoyed the match..it was a happy game.

Mariano was very happy to reach the main draw without qualifying. Paris off court was lots of fun.. The following Paradorn match against Henman was terrible.... so... Mariano brought out the best in Paradorn and Paradorn discovered Ms magic for us too.

M had a wonderful welcome onto court and a standing ovation when he left.

It was a great match to end 2004.

Mariano is in the draw for qualies, and he faces Thierry Ascione in the first round. There will be a group of us, with flags and warpaint planning to make as much noise and visual support as possible, to hopefully get Mariano through to Round 2 of Qualifying.

This page will be out of date as of now - as we have an early flight.... but please check the message board for updates!!!!!!!

Mariano!! if you see this - good luck for tomorrow (and thank you).

You KNOW you won't MISS us tomorrow!!! LOL

Olympic News

The Draw for the Olympics has now been released.

There are some really tough first round encounters, especially for the 16 seeds!!!

Mariano has been blessed by the Greek Gods and given H-T Lee for his first opponent.

A group of us will try our hardest to make sure he gets through the first round in Athens, and I am sure everyone else will join us in the Chat Room or on the Board making sure Mariano lives this Olympic dream as long as possible.

Here is the draw

Its officially official - He's in the Argentinian Olympic team!!!!!!

Offical Olympics News

Argentinian Mariano ZABALETA will replace world number three Guillermo CORIA (ARG) in the Men's Singles after he was ruled out due to a right shoulder injury. Agustin Calleri will replace Coria in the Doubles.

The Men's Singles and Doubles events start on Sunday 15 August.

Clarins article with quotes from Mariano (brilliant translation from Mercedes is available on the Message board (in the 100% official thread)

TMS Cincinati. Mariano destroyed Michael Llodra in the first round
He then met Wayne Arthurs who had his "impossible serve" head on, plus his bag of Aces - and beat Mariano 6-2 7-6 - on the day the rumours were 90% confirmed.

Olympic rumours.

There are various rumours from various sources circulating the web saying that Mariano is "next" in, should one of Gaston (no!) Chela (NO!!), Nalbandian or Coria get injured. Coria has got shoulder problems.... so.... (not that we are evil people willing this) there is a chance - if the rumours are true - Mariano could be going to Athens. Personally I hope he does go - he deserves it - and there will definitely be a support group there to support him (and Gaudio and Chela) should he make the cut.

Hmmm!!! I BET he won't have trouble finding accommodation!!!!

TMS Canada - Toronto

Mariano will face Tim Henman OBE in the first round

This should be a great match as both players have spent the last few weeks since Wimbledon collecting titles. Mr Henman's title

This will be Tim's first match since his loss at Wimbledon to Mario Ancic.

Since Wimbledon Mariano has been playing suberbly!! entertaining the Swedish, German and Austrian crowds immensly. We all hope he can now carry on his amazing run in Canada now.

Good luck from all that come here!

Tim Won

Mariano is in Kitzbuel this week.

He is seeded 5th, an had a bye in the first round. He played Oscar Hernandez in the second round - beat him - and has beaten Radek Stepanek 6-3 7-5 in the 3rd round.... Nicolas Massu is next!

A group of us met up for the first 5 days (Saturday - Wednesday) - some are still there partying - reports will be coming very soon!!!

Good luck Mariano!!!

from the People that really enjoy supporting you in all your matches :o)

Mariano went back to Sweden!

and WON again!!!!!!

Congratulations Champion!!!!

Please go to the Message board for various threads including official reports and "being drowned" pictures!!!

Here is

the draw

He faces Joachim Johansson in the first round of Bastad. Even though Joachim will have some of the home crowd - there is a big group of Swedish Mariano Fans there to cheer on Mariano (Loudly!)

Reports from the Swedish fans say that todays'match was very good but the wind was very strong, disturbing the game at times... but it was a good game! (thanks Per!)

News from the Official Website articles now
(these are all quotes from articles found on the Official Website (English Version).

(First the Monday's preview comment)

Thereafter, it is time for Joachim "Pim-Pim" Johansson to enter the tournament. He is up against the reigning champion Mariano Zabaleta. "Pim-Pim" is confident after reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon, but is facing one of the most tricky clay courters on the tour, who will do anything to defend his title.

Then the after view...

Mariano Zabaleta faced Joachim “Pim-Pim” Johansson. The reigning champion looked solid out there as he won in two straight sets.

- I am happy to get through this first match. He (Johansson) is a good player who has a bright future, Zabaleta said.

Now Wednesday's official preview

The Båstad crowd will get another look at Mariano Zabaleta. The reigning champion has become a crowd favorite with his entertaining game and his outgoing personality. He defeated Joachim “Pim-Pim” Johansson on Tuesday, and will now face Irakli Labadze, who made life hard for Mathias Hellström in the first round.

Mariano despatched Labadze in 3 set

Here is part of the Official Report for Wednesday's match.

Zabaleta Moves On

Defending champion Mariano Zabaleta moved through to the quarterfinals after a tough duel against Irakli Labadze.

It was really difficult to play against Labadze. You never know what to expect, Zabaleta told the crowd after the match.

It was a rollercoaster match. Zabaleta was the more solid player in the first set but the match had a sudden turn thereafter. The Georgian started to play some great tennis and used his powerful forehand to move Zabaleta around the court. For a moment, it was not difficult to see that Labadze has been able to beat Andre Agassi earlier in his career.

But when the final set got under way, it was Zabaleta who once again was in charge and walked away with the victory.

- I love this tournament and I am very happy to be in the quarterfinal, Zabaleta told the amused crowd.

All Official reports and Orders of Play can be found here

Mariano has reached the Quarterfinals and will face Albert Martin at 11am on Court 1.

Good luck to "Tricky Claycourter Reigning Champion Crowd Favourite" - from everyone who comes here!

(Future's bright - the future is Orange......)

Media Reports Game by Game Commentary and Fan Comments

Mariano then faced Nicolas Massu in the quarter finals!!! - he easily despatched him 6-1 7-5!!

Media reports Game by Game Commentary and Fan Comments

The first set was just incredible! - the commentators (Leif Sharif and Barry Cowan) were totally in awe of Mariano, he was just incredible. Massu could do nothing but watch the powerful exhibition on the otherside of the net.

Set 2 Massu found a way into the match - and it was very close - Mariano was serving to stay in the second set (on serve) - Massu showed signs of turning the pressure, this was an incredible set - but Mariano held for 5-5 and then broke again 6-5 - Massu's resolve crumbled and Mariano carried on his power play and finished the match with a neat drop shot - and celebrated in style - of course :o)

The Studio commentators, Peter Fleming and Chris Bailey were in total awe too - they spend at least 10 minutes analysing the match stating how wonderful Mariano was!

Congratulations on reaching the semis!!! - keep winning!!!!!

Here are the stats for the Massu match

Here is the draw.

Mariano's next tournament is Barcelona.

He is also playing doubles with Gustavo Kuerten. They are already in the second round after defeating Chris Haggard and Jan-Michael Gambil in 3 sets 4-6 7-6 6-4! - they saved 4 match points in the second set!!!

Mariano will be playing an Italian Lucky Loser in the Second Match of Court 3 on Tuesday. He won in straight sets! - Kitzfan, Giovi and Egg, who were courtside said "Mariano swept the Clay with the Italian!".

Mariano faced Fernando Vicente on Wednesday, first match Court 1 - he continued his clay sweeping and defeated him 6-0 6-3!!

Newsflash - live from Barcelona... Email from Kitzfan, Egg and Giovi

Hi

For some reason we can't access the board from here, so here is a little update about today's matches.

The singles started half an hour late thanks to the rain.

Mariano wore whitish Nike shoes, white sox, white shorts, black (or some other dark colour :) Bjorn Borg undies (says Giovi :), dark blue T- shirt, and a white cap. The match was one-way traffic, although the first set should've been 6:1. At one point he was 0:40 down, and hit something wide - according to Vicente and us, but Mr Graf wasn't willing to give it a closer look, and he came back, which really discouraged Vicente. The second set was closer, but not close - poor Vicente had no choice whatsoever. Mariano hit winners from all angles - lots of impressive drop volleys, and great action at the net. A very impressive win!!! :)

As for the doubles, well, it wasn't a serious affair. The Israelies took it seriously, Mariano and Guga didn't. The last part of the match was fun anyway, it was more important who they hit than who won the point, and their opponent were absolutely partners in it, which was nice to see. So it was fun in the end, but still, we're sorry that we won't see them playing doubles again. (If anyone is interested: same gear, except white shirt and no cap but black bandana. :)

As for tomorrow, well, it won't be easy, but it should be a great match. Gonzalez is in fantastic form. He was amazing against Nico today, and yesterday in the doubles he couldn't do wrong. But Mariano is in good form too, so it should be a great match-up.

We're having a great time, our guys are doing quite well (except for poor Chela, who was better today than yesterday, but still not good enough). Details when we get home.

The tournament is great, so is Barcelona!!! Sangrilla rulez!!!!! :)))

Vamos Mariano!!!!! (And Gaston, and Calleri, and Nalbi, and... no rain, please!!!)

Question to Ros: any chance of you coming????? :)))

Hugs to everyone,

kitzfan, Giovi, egg

SO... Mariano will face Fernando Gonzalez in round 3.

This is their first (official) meeting.

This should be a great match!

INDIAN WELLS REPORT AND PICTURES ARE COMING SOON!

(Latest news provided by Marcus and Louise - from Paradise - this page will be updated as often as possible subject to available technology)

Mariano is in Indian Wells at the moment along with 95 other men and 96 women - this tournament is a wonderful Tennis haven.

For people that are not here, there are 6 playing courts, (3 stadium) and millions of practice courts. These practice courts are a tennis fan's delight! - the fences are at waist level and all the players are accessible to everyone. There is a huge green along side the practice courts - this is turned into a soccerfield or Professional Tennis Player Excerise area - again perfect viewing for the devoted fan.

OK, now I have described paradise, here is the latest news.

Most of the Argentinians have been practicing twice a day, for about 2 hours per session, Mariano and Canas, Chela and Gaudio, Chela and Massu, Lucas Arnold all working really hard and supporting each other. All extremely very good at signing photographs.

MERCEDES' BUENOS AIRES REPORT WITH MORE EXCLUSIVE PICTURES!!!

Mariano def Jean Rene Lisnard 6-4 6-4!!
He now faces Oscar Hernandez in the second round.

This is what the Official Website had to say

Picture of the day is from Mercedes (who said "He played great!") - thank you very much for this picture

Quotes from the Official ATP Report

Third seed Mariano Zabaleta progressed to the next round after meeting some difficulties against Spaniard Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in their first match-up on an ATP event. Zabaleta, who made his debut after injury break, won the first set 6-3, then dropped the second 64 and evened out the encounter. A good start in the third set led him to conclude victory easily 6-1.

Quote from "What the Players Say - Zabaleta:

"I am happy of being back after my injury break. It is great to be in the quarters of this tournament. Saretta is a tough opponent, plus he is much more rested than me as he had 2 easy rounds but I am here to win and I will leave everything on the court if I need to."

Paris Bercy

A group of us from the message board went to Paris this week.

(the match was phenomenal! (wrong result - but a great match to finish off the year!!)

IF any "group member" would like to send me a quick paragraph or two - I will add your comments to the report too!

IF... Stockholm -

Mariano will be returning to Sweden this week... this time to Stochholm.

From the News page on the Stockholm site...

There will be an interesting match-up between Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina and Kenneth Carlsen from Denmark. Zabaleta won the Swedish Open in Båstad a little more than three months ago and is hoping to keep winning in Sweden. 30-year old Carlsen is an experienced player who has been in three quarterfinals during the year. The two have never played against each other before, but this should prove to be an entertaining match between two contradicting styles of play.

Next Tournament - TMS Madrid.

Official Madrid Site

Mariano's first round opponent was Felicano Lopez. This was their second (official) meeting - they were spotted practicing together this weekend....

They last met at Roland Garros this year and Mariano wiped the court with Lopez, 6-2 7-6 (10) 6-0! - this was one of Mariano's many excellent matches of 2003!

The rematch proved to be another excellent Mariano match too. The fact that Lopez snuck the win this time is besides the point - this match was brilliant.

Here is my match summary

Lopez won the first set - because Mohammed Liani (my ex-favourite umpire!) basically either needs glasses or needs to go back to Umpire school....

He argued with Mariano on line calls (most of which should have been in Mariano's favour... but were not! - the hawkeye thing proved this), so as a result, Lopez took his chances and won the first set.

Mariano stormed the 2nd set! he stuffed Lopez 6-2 and basically showed the world his magical tennis that makes the regulars to this site want to see him again and again and again! This was so wonderful to see after hearing last week's reports.

Set 3 was totally incredible. Mariano broke straight away and took a 2-0 lead, but both players fought like crazy for each point, taking chances, and losing chances, they were both basically "living by the sword or dying by the sword" - it was brilliant. Lopez got a lucky break to level the set and then another to take the lead at 5-3 - Lopez rounded off the match with a phenomenal love game... The match was breathtaking.

The Commentators (Leif Shiras and Barry Cowan - a British Guy!) LOVE Mariano!! - they raved about him constantly - oh yeah they even said Lopez was pretty good.... :-)

So Lopez snuck the win.... but hey it was an amazing match - which was great for all us worried Mariano fans to see!!!!

This was a comment found on another Message board.... it basically sums up yesterday perfectly.

Well it might have been a tough day to pick winners but it was certainly great to watch the sport played the way it was intended. Plenty of effort and congratulations to Gaudio, Corretja and Zabaleta (despite losing). Lopez v Zab was definitely worth staying up for.

Head to Head 1-0

Good Luck!!!
